Longevity Supplements for Boomers

As the Baby Boomer generation is growing older they are getting more and more concerned with staying young and / or, staying alive.  Herbal supplements are becoming very popular with this group of Americans. The Chinese have been researching the benefits of natural cures for the Anti-aging process for centuries.

Below are a few examples of Chinese herbal supplements and some results that some people have seen.  Scientists are applying modern methods to determine the precise effect of these plants have on the anti-aging process. Many of the effects that have been confirmed by modern science have already been studied and popularized in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Jiaogulan

Jiaogulan is a Chinese herb also called the Longevity Herb and in Japan it is called Amachazuru and it is used to increase the Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) in the body. Researchers use the SOD levels in studies as a reliable indicator of long life. SOD is one of the body’s most important antioxidants. Human studies have showed that SOD levels can returned to youthful levels after taking Jiaogulan for only one month.

Reishi mushroom

The Reishi mushroom has been uses by the Chinese and Japanese and is also known as the "Elixir Of Immortality". It may have the ability to promote long life and improve the healing ability of the human body. It is believed to lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, has anti-tumor properties, improves liver functions, improves oxygen utilization, and inhibits histamine release.

Shilajit

Shilajit is found in the Himalayan mountains and has been used by the local residents for centuries. It is not unusually for the people living in that region to live to be over 100 years of age. Shilajit has been used for increasing physical strength, anti-aging, increased sex drive, injury healing, enhances mental function and the immune system.

Foti

Foti also called He Shou Wu in China is legendary in its ability to lengthen life. Modern studies have show that Foti has toe ability to lower serum cholesterol, prevent premature gray hair, promote red blood cell growth, and to increase longevity on a cellular level. This herb raises the level of the naturally occurring antioxidant Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) in the body.

*****

No serious discussion on longevity can occur without including good nutrition, i.e. Food for Health Damage Control.  The American industrial diet is lacking in many areas.

Our lifespan is directly proportional to the level of nutrition we have access to, the exercise we get on a consistant basis, as well as the balance of many other factors.  Suffice it to say that all other things being equal, nutrition and exercise will extend a lifespan, or postpone our age of disability.

In addition to the Chinese herbs listed, it is generally accepted that the fruits and vegetables should be a large part of our diet and most people do not get enough.  There are many whole food dietary supplements available which the body recognizes as food because it is not synthetic, but, as the name implies, is whole food.

Antioxidants are important because they help prevent cancer.  Digestive enzymes are important to the digestive system, helping to keep the colon healthy and the immune system in shape.  All these are found in fruits and veggies.  Because most people do not eat enough of them, the obvious next best thing is whole food supplements.  Be aware of synthetic vitamins, as the same benefits can not be expected.

A good diet coupled with a good whole food supplement  is considered by many to be a natural cure (or natural cure remedies) for many ailments -high blood pressure balance, high cholesterol among them.

The human body can becomes accustomed to taking herbs over time, and the effects will become less and less beneficial. It is necessary that your body is able to adjust to being without the herb for the effects to be noted when you start taking them again. I recommend that you take herbs for 4 weeks and then abstain for 1 week.

If you just feel that taking vitamins, a good  whole food supplement or herbs to fight the aging process would be beneficial to you then you should always consult with a good health care professional prior to starting any type of home treatment. Always consult your doctor before using this information.

Longevity, Nutrition and Balance

Our goal is to stay on our feet.

60 Years On

I was someone who had been been exercising for years and eating a pretty balanced diet but I kept wondering if I was doing enough to keep me in the best of health as I get older.

I’m 60 now.  It amazes me that so many people take their health for granted.  Granted, when we were younger we thought we were bullet-proof.  But, I now realize I need to be proactive about my health if I don’t want to be confined to a rocker.

I run a couple of miles a couple of times a week.  I don’t like it (although I do like how I feel afterward).   I do it because I can.  There are folks my age and younger who can’t run across a street.

I feel that if I don’t run it won’t be long and I won’t be able to.  Many folks who can’t run cannot because they do not.  We’re watching our parents slip toward a wheel chair because they don’t do anything.  They’re becoming weaker and less steady every year.  If they would only get out of the chair and walk around the block they’d be doing themselves a big favor -but, I can’t tell them anything.  They don’t listen to me.

Anyway, as fast as the last 20 to 25 years blew by, I know the next 20 will go by as fast or faster.  I’ll be an old geezer by then and I don’t want to be a ‘run of the mill’ old person.

Mario Cuomo said we now face the prospect of living to the ‘age of disability.’  A generation or two ago, people often died before they were disabled.  Today we’re living longer.  My goal is to push that date as far out as I can… to live long and be fit and able.

That takes being proactive, yes?  My wife and I have discovered the link between nutrition and good health.

The USDA now says we need 9 servings of veggies and fruits a day.  I think a good whole food supplement will do a better job of getting the proper nutrition.  How can one eat 9 servings of fruits and veggies a day?  Even if you like them?  It would choke a goat, I’m sure.

I am now confident I’m doing all I can to be able to run an easy couple of miles 20 years from now and I don’t worry about it anymore.
