60 Years On
I was someone who had been been exercising for years and eating a pretty balanced diet but I kept wondering if I was doing enough to keep me in the best of health as I get older.
I’m 60 now. It amazes me that so many people take their health for granted. Granted, when we were younger we thought we were bullet-proof. But, I now realize I need to be proactive about my health if I don’t want to be confined to a rocker.
I run a couple of miles a couple of times a week. I don’t like it (although I do like how I feel afterward). I do it because I can. There are folks my age and younger who can’t run across a street.
I feel that if I don’t run it won’t be long and I won’t be able to. Many folks who can’t run cannot because they do not. We’re watching our parents slip toward a wheel chair because they don’t do anything. They’re becoming weaker and less steady every year. If they would only get out of the chair and walk around the block they’d be doing themselves a big favor -but, I can’t tell them anything. They don’t listen to me.
Anyway, as fast as the last 20 to 25 years blew by, I know the next 20 will go by as fast or faster. I’ll be an old geezer by then and I don’t want to be a ‘run of the mill’ old person.
Mario Cuomo said we now face the prospect of living to the ‘age of disability.’ A generation or two ago, people often died before they were disabled. Today we’re living longer. My goal is to push that date as far out as I can… to live long and be fit and able.
That takes being proactive, yes? My wife and I have discovered the link between nutrition and good health.
The USDA now says we need 9 servings of veggies and fruits a day. I think a good whole food supplement will do a better job of getting the proper nutrition. How can one eat 9 servings of fruits and veggies a day? Even if you like them? It would choke a goat, I’m sure.
I am now confident I’m doing all I can to be able to run an easy couple of miles 20 years from now and I don’t worry about it anymore.
